Vintage Cherry Winks made with dates, pecans, candied cherries, and a crunchy corn flake coating. This version uses candied cherries instead of maraschino cherries for less added moisture.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup pecans chopped
  • 1 cup dates chopped
  • 1/3 cup candied cherries chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups corn flakes cereal coarsely crushed
  • 15 candied cherries quartered, for topping

Equipment

Method

  1. In a large bowl, beat the sugar and shortening with an electric mixer on medium speed, scraping the bowl as needed, until well blended.
  2. Beat in the milk, vanilla extract, and eggs until combined.
  3. On low speed, mix in the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until a cookie dough forms.
  4. Stir in the chopped pecans, chopped dates, and 1/3 cup chopped candied cherries.
  5. If the dough is difficult to handle, cover and refrigerate for about 15 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly spray cookie sheets with cooking spray. Place the coarsely crushed corn flakes in a shallow bowl.
  7. Drop the dough by rounded teaspoonfuls into the crushed corn flakes and coat thoroughly. Gently shape each portion into a ball.
  8. Place the cookies about 2 inches apart on the prepared cookie sheets and lightly press one candied cherry quarter into the top of each cookie.
  9. Bake at 375°F for 10–15 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly golden.
  10. Cool on the cookie sheet for 1 minute, then transfer to a cooling rack and cool completely before storing.

Notes

  • This version uses candied cherries instead of the maraschino cherries in the classic recipe. They are drier and added less moisture to my batch.
  • Keep the corn flakes coarsely crushed so the baked coating stays visibly crisp.
  • Chill the dough for about 15 minutes only if it is too sticky to handle comfortably.
  • Start checking around 10 minutes. The cookies should be set and lightly golden, with lightly toasted corn flakes.
  • Nutrition is estimated per cookie from a 60-cookie batch and varies by brand and portion size.
